- knee problems-in high school I was told if I dislocated my knee one more time I would need surgery. So my mom told me not to push myself. So I didn't.
- heart murmur-when I went to my first prenatal physical, I was told I had a heart murmur and figured well, that's why I hate running/can't run.
The date, September 6th, shall live in infamy and very nearly killed all my hopes of ever "conditioning up" to be able to really run. I figured my poor heart murmur (see excuse number two) was just incapable of handling real running. Basically, I set out at a run about the same pace as I would run in place, big difference being that running in place burns alot less energy. After two minutes I decided to push just a little longer, after all, I regularly did 30+ minute "runs" on the wii. After five minutes, I thought I was going to keel over dead.
Too much too fast? Check.
Discouraging? You betcha.
Went back to a program of step aerobics and weights and cardio videos for the next couple months while I slowly started checking out books from the library to research what on earth went wrong. And figure it out I did.
Now I'm a couple weeks into a beginning running program and hope to run a 5K by the end of this spring and hopefully a five mile next fall. I figure I'm good for it.
